Alexandria, VA (09/04/2012)—ASCD, the global leader in providing programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner, has been awarded three Green Globes from the Green Building Initiative. The Green Globes designation recognizes ASCD's commitment to maintaining a sustainable building.
ASCD, a nonprofit association headquartered in Alexandria, Va., was evaluated on a 1,000-point scale across several dimensions, including energy and water consumption, waste reduction, recycling, emissions, environmental management, and indoor environment. ASCD received additional points for its plans to reduce water consumption and energy use; air-quality monitoring; and construction, renovation, and waste-management plans.
ASCD began its work toward certification in 2007 and was awarded Two Green Globes in 2009. Certified buildings are required to be inspected every three years to maintain their certification. Since 2009, the association reduced its paper consumption by 22 percent and has instituted an environmental purchasing policy with Staples so that a minimum of 25 percent of the association's office supplies are made from green or recycled products. Additionally, approximately 90 percent of the cleaning products that ASCD uses in its building are environmentally friendly.
In addition to reducing energy and resource consumption within the ASCD headquarters, the association has implemented several policies and programs to help reduce employees' carbon footprints. For example, ASCD has a telecommuting program for employees, compressed work week schedules, carpool options, and subsidized Metro passes.
