Helen Wyman, Jeremy Powers take day 1 at Gran Prix of Gloucester
Sep 30th 2012, 03:00

GLOUCESTER, Massachusetts (VN) — Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing) and Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) prevailed on Saturday during day one of the Gran Prix of Gloucester, the first stop on the 2012 Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series.

The women’s race got under way under cloudy skies, and British ‘cross champ Wyman grabbed a gap early on, chased by countrywoman Gabby Day (Rapha-Focus), Meredith Miller (California Giant-Specialized), Crystal Anthony (Cyclocrossworld.com) and Andrea Smith (LadiesFirst).

Day attacked at mid-race and drove to within sight of Wyman, but couldn’t close the gap and had to settle for second. Miller and Anthony battled for third, with the Cal Giant rider claiming the final spot on the podium.

In the elite men’s race U.S. 'cross champ Powers got off to a poor start after missing a pedal, but worked his way up to a lead group that included Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com teammates Tim Johnson and Ryan Trebon.

Crowd favorite Johnson led the group around the off-cambers and over the barriers until he, Powers and Trebon escaped a Euro’ contingent composed of Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement), British champion Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Specialized) and Nicolas Bazin (Team Auber 93).

Trebon then took the lead, dogged by Powers, and Johnson found himself gapped. Then the U.S. champ punched it and relegated the lanky Oregonian to second on the day.

Berden pressed Johnson for the final spot on the podium, but the American rode strongly and smoothly to finish third.

GP Gloucester continues with day two on Sunday. Next up in the Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series is the Providence Cyclocross Festival October 6-7 in Rhode Island.
